Water provision as a peacebuilding tool

Today, Saferworld published its latest report on conflict-sensitive development: ‘Water provision as a peacebuilding tool: developing a conflict-sensitive approach to water delivery in Uganda’.

Based on a water provision project in Uganda by Saferworld and local partner, the Center for Conflict Resolution (CECORE), the report highlights how taking a conflict-sensitive approach to water delivery can improve the effectiveness of water projects and ensure they contribute to peaceful relations within communities.

The report is based on research and lessons learned from the field, and looks at how conflict sensitivity can be integrated in the following areas in Uganda, with specific considerations for the conflict-affected regions of Northern and North-Eastern Uganda:

  • existing national water policies
  • key actors in the water sector
  • the assessment and planning phases of water projects
  • the software (working with communities)
  • operation and maintenance of water provision

The report concludes with recommendations on how conflict-sensitive water provision can be taken forward across Uganda.
