UK MP discusses development and security in Kosovo

In July, Saferworld accompanied the Liberal Democrat Shadow Secretary for International Development, Michael Moore MP, on a trip to Kosovo to see for himself the development and security issues facing the country.

During his stay, Mr Moore met Kosovo parliamentarians from across the political spectrum, several key ministers and representatives from local civil society and international organisations. The Shadow Secretary discussed the role of MPs in providing parliamentary oversight on security issues with the Kosovo Assembly’s Security and Internal Affairs Committee. He also visited the Trepca Mine Complex and Kosovo B Power Station, both examples of long-term challenges for Kosovo’s development.

We took Mr Moore to some of our community safety projects where he met local partners the Forum for Civic Initiatives, Initiative for Progress and Communication for Social Development.

“We were keen for the Shadow Secretary to hear first hand the concerns, hopes and fears of people in Kosovo,” says Mia Marzouk, Team Leader on Saferworld’s Europe programme. “We hope Mr Moore is able to feed these grassroots views directly into the debate on Kosovo back in the UK.”
