Unprofessional and unaccountable police forces do not protect and serve the public as they should. Instead of safeguarding the public and offering them access to justice, they often worsen social tensions or abuse human rights.
This is especially true in fragile, under-developed or conflict-affected countries.
Saferworld and local partners work with governments and communities to implement community-based policing in Bosnia, Moldova and Kenya.
Community-based policing is an innovative and democratic style of policing, it seeks to reform the police to be more responsive and transparent provider of safety and security to communities.
If practised properly, community-based policing can transform lives and communities by reducing crime and the fear of crime, increasing access to justice and helping to create more peaceful communities.
